Netflix has signed a deal with Disney that will see Marvel produce four new and exclusive live-action series for the SVoD platform.

The deal is described by Disney as Marvel Television’s “most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling” yet.

It includes a minimum of four 13-episode series, based around the characters Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, plus miniseries The Defenders.

All content will be produced by Disney’s Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios for Netflix, with the first series expected for delivery in 2015.

Marvel and ABC’s production studios most recently worked together on live-action superhero drama Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, alongside The Avengers feature film writer Joss Whedon.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling,” said Alan Fine, president of Marvel Entertainment.

“This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“With House of Cards and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

The partnership follows Netflix and the Mouse House signing a multi-year deal for movies last year.

That pact hands the OTT platform the exclusive first-run SVoD rights within the US for live-action and animated features from Disney from 2016, ending a relationship with Starz, and includes content from Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm and Pixar Animation Studios.

Netflix already has an output deal with Disney rival DreamWorks Animation for over 300 hours of original series based on some of the studio’s biggest movie franchises.
