The US SVoD service launched in South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan in early 2016 as part of its global roll-out strategy.

Since then, the streamer has faced strong competition in Korea and there has been a notable lack of original content from the territory.

But Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told local press his firm is considering production in Korea and that more details will be announced later this year

Hastings declined to reveal how much the company is looking to invest in Korean content.

The firm is currently working with Korean film director Bong Joon-ho to shoot a movie titled Okja to be release this year.

Worldwide it is building up a number of local originals, including political drama Marseille for its French service. In the UK, it commissioned British monarchy drama The Crown, while in Italy it has greenlit crime thriller Suburra. Its US originals portfolio includes House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Last month, the firm ordered its first original series from India, a Hindi- and English-language adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s novel Sacred Games.
