Netflix lines up Madeleine McCann doc

Streaming giant Netflix is to produce a Making a Murderer-style documentary series about the mysterious disappearance of British youngster Madeleine McCann in Portugal.

The SVoD service, along with Pulse Films, will create an as-yet-untitled eight-part series that will include interviews with investigators and key figures from the case.

Madeleine McCann was just three years old when she went missing from her hotel room one evening in 2007 while on holiday in Portugal’s Praia de Luz with her family.

The disappearance and subsequent investigation made international headlines and sparked global interest as new leads and possible sightings emerged over the years. Madeleine’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the programme, which is the latest in a series of true crime offerings from the streamer that have courted interest and controversy.

Last year, it released a doc about Amanda Knox and the overturning of her conviction for involvement in the death of student Meredith Kercher, while 10-parter Making a Murderer, examining the conviction of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for the murder of Teresa Halbach, made headlines around the world in 2015.

Another true crime documentary, The Keepers, focusing on the unsolved murder of teacher Sister Cathy Cesnik, was released earlier this year.
