Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed the news at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour.

Lilyhammer, starring Steven Van Zandt (The Sopranos), tells the story of a New York mobster who moves to Lillehammer – the Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics – after entering the witness relocation programme.

The show, created by Anne Bjørstad and Eilif Skodvin and coproduced by Netflix, Rubicon TV and Norwegian pubcaster NRK, was renewed for a third run last year, with Netflix remaining the US outlet and Red Arrow International the global distributor.

The series debuted in Norway on pubcaster NRK1 in 2012 to record-breaking ratings. It sold to numerous broadcasters around the world, including Israeli satellite broadcaster Yes and Middle Eastern VoD service Icflix.

The series now joins a small list of Netflix shows to be cancelled – the others being The Killing and Hemlock Grove. However, the show may still have a future, as producer Rubicon and Van Zandt are understood to be looking at a fourth season.

In related news, Netflix has announced it will debut a new documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards on September 18.

Keith Richards: Under the Influence, from filmmaker Morgan Neville, looks at the places and people that have influenced Richards’ life as a musician.

Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom) produces along with Justin Wilkes (What Happened Miss Simone?) and Jane Rose (Crossfire Hurricane). It’s the latest Netflix original documentary following the likes of Tig and Virunga.

This week, Netflix has renewed its original animated series BoJack Horseman for a third season and has also set premiere dates for western drama Longmire and Aziz Ansari’s new comedy show.
