US-based streamer Netflix has handed out a straight-to-series order for a reboot of classic 1960s sci-fi show Lost in Space.

The 10-part series is being produced by US-based prodco Legendary TV and is being prepared to air in 2018.

The project has been in development with Netflix since November and is based on the original series that aired on CBS, which follows a family who have to deal with an alien environment after being stranded in space.

The revamped version has been written by Dracula Untold duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who exec produces alongside Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni of Synthesis Entertainment. Also attached is Zack Estrin (Prison Break), who will be showrunner.

Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix, said: “The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience.

“The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to fans who fondly remember the original and create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

Previous attempts to revive the show have been made, including a TV movie version starring Matt LeBlanc in 1998. Lost in Space becomes the latest veteran TV drama to be rebooted, joining MacGyver on CBS and Prison Break on Fox.
