Netflix brings Winx Club to life

The original version of action-fantasy series Winx Club

Netflix has ordered a live-action series for young adults based on the animated franchise Winx Club from Italian producer-distributor Rainbow Group.

The as-yet-untitled series will see the six fairies from the animated show turn into real teenagers for the first time, with the characters learning to hone their powers while living together in a magic boarding school.

Winx Club was created by Iginio Straffi, founder and CEO of Rainbow Group, who produced the show in Italy.

Rainbow originally made seven seasons of Winx Club for Italian pubcaster Rai, which has aired the series since 2004, and Nickelodeon, which started airing it in 2011, making it the first Italian cartoon to travel successfully to the US.

In 2016, Netflix exclusively released two seasons of World of Winx, a spin-off from Winx Club, globally. The streamer has since said the property has been popular with audiences around the world.

Speaking about the live-action series, Erik Barmack, VP of international originals at Netflix, said: “The famous fairies will grow up with their audience and will explore complex themes as real-life teenage super heroines in a live-action show.”

The commission comes after Melissa Cobb, VP of kids and family at Netflix, said last month the SVoD giant was seeking to add more live-action original series for a kids and family audience.
