Netflix boards CBC adaptation

Netflix has joined forces with Canadian pubcaster CBC on a forthcoming adaptation of the novel Anne of Green Gables.

The project, from Miranda de Pencier’s Northwood Entertainment, was greenlit by CBC in January and will air next year. Netflix has taken global rights outside Canada.

The series, titled Anne, centres on a young orphaned girl in 1890. Having endured an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, she is sent to live with an elderly spinster and her ageing brother.

The one-hour series comes from showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett and is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel. Director Nili Caro has signed up to direct the two-hour premiere episode.

In related news, Netflix has greenlit an original comedy series titled Friends From College.

The 8×30’ series, which hails from husband-and-wife team Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, follows a group of friends who attended Harvard University and are now in their forties.

Production will begin in New York this fall.
