Netflix axes Marco Polo

Marco Polo will not get a third season

Netflix has cancelled its original adventure-drama Marco Polo after two seasons.

The Weinstein Company-produced series, originally developed for Starz, was the first Netflix original to be developed in the US for the global market.

Marco Polo, which explored the early days of the Venetian explorer in 13th century China, launched in 2014 to mixed reviews from critics despite many praising its impressive CGI and scale.

Creator John Fusco’s second season followed Polo as he navigated Kublai Khan’s world of greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry.

Fusco was exec producer along with Dan Minahan. Academy Award-nominated directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg also exec produced.

Polo now becomes one of the highest-profile dramas to be cancelled by Netflix, whose originals roster includes House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, BoJack Horseman, The Crown, Longmire, Love, Narcos and Marseille.
