Netflix allured by Perfume

BERLINALE: Global SVoD giant Netflix has boarded a thriller series loosely based on a bestselling novel by Patrick Suskind, taking worldwide rights outside of German-speaking Europe.

Perfume is a German-language crime thriller being made by Constantin Film, German broadcasters ZDF/ZDFneo and Arri Media in association with Netflix. The latter has also picked up second-window streaming rights to the six parter.

Philipp Kadelbach is the director and Constantin’s Oliver Berben is executive producer on the project. Gunther van Endert from ZDF and Florian Weber of ZDFneo are overseeing for their respective networks.

Suskind’s original story follows a murderer who possesses a powerful sense of smell.

Perfume is currently in post-production and will premiere on ZDFneo in Germany and on Netflix worldwide this autumn.

In addition, Netflix has ordered an animated comedy from the creators of Bojack Horseman called Tuca & Bertie.

The 10-episode series, tells the story of a friendship between two 30-year-old bird women – one cocky and carefree, the other anxious and daydreaming – who live in the same apartment building.

Tuca & Bertie is created by Lisa Hanawalt (Bojack Horseman), who exec produces alongside by Bojack veterans Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen. Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), who voices title character Tuca, also exec produces.

The series is produced by Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company, which also produces Bojack, and animation is being done by US firm Shadowmachine.
