Netflix adopts Gaumont’s Family

Netflix is expanding its animation slate by ordering a half-hour comedy series from stand-up comedian Bill Burr.

F is For Family, from Gaumont International Television and Wild West Television, will debut in all of the streaming platform’s territories in 2015. Its voice cast will include Jurassic Park star Laura Dern and Justin Long (Dodgeball).

It marks the third Gaumont production on Netflix after horror series Hemlock Grove and forthcoming Pablo Escobar biopic Narcos.

However, F is For Family will be the first foray into animation by Gaumont’s US production arm, tapping the expertise of sister business Gaumont Animation in France.

The comedy, created by Burr and Michael Price (The Simpsons), follows the Murphy family in the 1970s, at a time, Netflix says, when you could smack your kid, smoke inside and bring a gun to the airport.

Burr will voice the role of the family’s extreme patriarch, Dern will voice Frank’s wife and Long will play their oldest son.

The show is exec-produced by Burr, Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and showrunner Michael Price. Michael Lagnese and Victoria Vaughn, from Wild West Television, are co-exec producers of the series.

F is For Family adds to Netflix’s growing comedy slate, which includes animated series BoJack Horseman, already renewed for a second season.

This week, Netflix ordered its first original series from Canada and linked up with Wolf of Wall Street star and environmental campaigner Leonardo DiCaprio for the release of Virunga, a feature-length documentary about African gorilla preservation.
