Netflix adds Coen Brothers to family

Netflix is working with Academy Award-winning duo the Coen Brothers on a six-part Western anthology series.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will be written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and produced by Annapurna Television. It will premiere next year.

Starring Tim Blake Nelson in the lead role, it will feature six tales about the American frontier, “told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen,” Netflix said.

The series is a major coup for the streaming service as it marks the first time the pair, best known for movies such as Fargo, No Country For Old Men and The Big Lebowski, have created a project for television.

Joel and Ethan Coen will also serve as executive producers alongside Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle from Annapurna Television, as well as long-time Coen Brothers collaborator Robert Graf.

“The Coens are visionary directors, masterful storytellers and colourful linguists. We are thrilled for Netflix to become home to the full range of their talents,” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content for Netflix.

It has been a mixed week for the streaming giant, which announced an exclusive project with David Letterman but also saw its stock slip as a result of Disney revealing its plan to pull its movies off the service in 2019.

Annapurna Television is currently in pre-production on the HBO limited series Today Will Be Different, based on Maria Semple’s novel and set to star Julia Roberts. It is also producing the adult animated series Amberville for Amazon.
