NBCU to invest in BuzzFeed

NBCUniversal (NBCU) is preparing to invest US$250m in online publisher BuzzFeed and is planning to take a stake in Vox Media, according to US reports.

The deal would value BuzzFeed at around US$1.5bn and would allow US-based media giant NBCU to reach younger audiences online, particularly those who view the publisher’s quizzes and video content via mobile devices.

The potential investment, first reported by Vox-owned US trade Re/code, comes as BuzzFeed ramps up its online video offering.

Research revealed last week predicted that online video consumption via mobile is set to soar over the next two years.

Meanwhile, NBCU is also preparing to invest in Vox, which is behind sites including Re/code and The Verge. NBCU parent Comcast already holds a 14% stake in Vox via its Ventures arm, with details of this latest deal yet to be revealed.
