NBCU acquires Outpost for Syfy

NBCUniversal International Networks (NBCUIN) has acquired a forthcoming fantasy-adventure series from the creators of Stargate and Stargate SG-1.

NBCUIN-owned Syfy will air The Outpost (10×60′) in the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Latin America, Poland, the Balkans, the Middle East, Africa and Australia in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The show, which went into production in Utah today, follows a strong female hero who, after discovering she possesses a mysterious supernatural power whilst tracking the killers of her family, must defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.

It is executive produced by Dean Devlin, the co-writer and producer of 1994 feature film Stargate, and Jonathan Glassner, showrunner/executive producer of series Stargate SG-1.

The distribution deal was agreed between NBCUIN and producer Electric Entertainment. The firm will continue to handle sales of the show in new territories at events such as Natpe in Miami, which begins today.

In addition to Devlin and Glassner, The Outpost is executive produced by Electric Entertainment’s Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson, and by Arrowstorm Entertainment’s Jason Faller, Kynan Griffin and Jennifer Griffin. The show was created by Kynan Griffin and Faller.

In related news, NBCUIN in Latin America has acquired an Argentinian crime drama about a former cop who enters a prison to solve a kidnapping case.

El Marginal (The Outsider) will become the first Spanish series to air on Universal Channel in Latin America following the distribution deal with Israel’s Dori Media Group.

The series was created by Sebastian Ortega and is a coproduction between Underground Producciones and TV Publica. It was previously sold by Dori to broadcasters such as Canal+ in France.

“We decided it was the right moment to introduce a high-quality Spanish-language original production as part of our offering. El Marginal brings a high quality of production, a diverse cast and a great story that will relate to other series we offer in our network,” said Klaudia Bermúdez-Key, senior VP and general manager of NBCUIN, Latin America.
