NBC’s Timeless runs out of time

Timeless

US broadcast network NBC has cancelled its time travel drama series Timeless for a second year running after two seasons.

NBC first cancelled the show last year after one season before reversing the decision and ordering 10 more episodes.

Timeless is produced by Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and there is now a possibility of a two-hour finale to end the show for good.

The new was confirmed by showrunner Shawn Ryan, who tweeted: “This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them.”

The series has had a chequered history, with SPT forced to deny allegations it was a rip-off of Spanish drama El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time). Spanish producer Onza Partners launched a legal action over the show in 2016.

SPT holds international distribution rights to the series, which was acquired by channels including Channel 4 in the UK and AXN in Japan. NBC ordered three more episodes to tag on to the end of its first season.

However, the US network has again cancelled the show, with co-creator Eric Kripke confirming the news via Twitter.

He tweeted: “Gutted by this, guys, I know you are too. Behind the scenes, Sony has been trying hard to set it up elsewhere, but no luck so far. I think this 2 hour movie is our best shot. We’re ready to make it if @nbc really wants it. Let ’em know how you feel.”
