A+E Networks’ US cablenet History is developing a show about Mexican drugs kingpin El Chapo with the co-creator of Netflix drama Narcos.

#Cartel will tell the story of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman and is being written with Chris Brancato, who was behind Narcos, Netflix’s series about another drug lord, Pablo Escobar.

The History show is being produced by ABC Signature, where Brancato has an overall deal, and A+E Studios. It will explore the life of El Chapo, the drug empire he built over 25 years and his use of social media to build his image.

“The show is a metaphor for the lives we present on the internet, the secret selves we reveal in supposedly private communication, and the risks of not-so-humble bragging on social media,” Brancato said.

“As we expand the canvas of topics covered by History to include events of the recent past, we are pleased to be teaming up with Chris Brancato on this project,’” said Bennett.

wolf_creek“The true story of El Chapo, fraught with murder, drugs, corruption and celebrity, has been and continues to be one of the most disturbing and fascinating of the past decade. Chris is the perfect person to bring this slice of modern history to the screen.”

El Chapo, widely recognised as one of the world’s most formidable drug lords, with a worth in excess of US$1bn, forged his career by smuggling cocaine from Colombia through Mexico into the US.

He was arrested in 1993 and 2014 but escaped on both occasions before being captured once more in January this year.
