Movile invests in kids’ VoD app

Latin American mobile services provider Movile has invested US$15m in its mobile and tablet video app PlayKids and stocked up on programming ahead of its expansion in Asia.

The funding will be used to grow the app in existing markets and increase its educational content around the world, Movile said.

The app is set to launch in Japan with series such as Pocoyo, Pingu, Peter Rabbit, Suzie’s Zoo and Thomas & Friends, from distributors including Silvergate Media and Hit Entertainment.

This comes after the subscription-based video service, which targets the under-fives and is currently available in 28 countries, was made available in China in December last year.

The company has previously stated that it has plans to expand the app – which is available on iOS- and Android-enabled devices – throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

“We created PlayKids to be a hub of educational and entertaining content, and with this investment we’re optimistic we’ll be able to offer kids more superior content and literature,” said Eduardo Henrique, head of global expansion at PlayKids.
