Michael Douglas drama tops Atrium slate

Commissioning club Atrium TV, backed by Howard Stringer and DRG, has revealed its second slate of dramas, led by a series from Hollywood star Michael Douglas.

Silo is written by Peter Horton and Raelle Tucker, with Horton and Douglas attached to produce.

The show is set in a future San Francisco where reduced resources and over-population have created gated communities that break up the social classes.

Also in the pipeline is A Dry Run: The Lincolns in Spain, a six-part miniseries created by David Simon that will be produced by Mediapro, Blown Deadline Productions and Mark Johnson.

The show is based on real events and follows the people who travelled to fight fascism during the Spanish Civil War. It features a mix of fictional and real characters, including writers George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway.

Doctor Zhivago is an eight-part series adapted from Boris Pasternak’s Nobel Prize-winning novel. Michael Hirst is attached as writer and the series will be created out of the UK by Sherlock producer Hartswood Films with Foz Allan.

The Last Amazon, from Narcos producer Gaumont, is written by Rafe Judkins with Gene Stein producing and Ava DuVernay attached to executive produce.

The show focuses on the mythological Amazon queens such as Antiope and Hippolyta and their battles with the Ancient Greeks.

Two of Atrium’s titles from its initial launch slate, One Giant Leap and Quasimodo, are also planned to go into production.

One Giant Leap is being written by Stephen Kronish and Oscar winner Mike Medavoy is attached as producer. It will go into production later this year.

Quasimodo is written by Ashley Pharoah and produced by Tracey Scoffield, David Tanner and Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger. Charles Dance and Peter Dinklage are also attached as executive producers and it will be made in 2019.

Atrium’s initial launch slate was unveiled at Mipcom in October. The club aims to create dramas budgeted at about US$5m per episode for regional OTT players and telcos.

The brainchild of Stringer and DRG CEO Jeremy Fox, Atrium has teams based in London and LA finding and developing suitable shows for its members, which include Viaplay in Scandinavia, Movistar+ in Spain, Deutsche Telekom and Iflix in Asia/MENA.
