Mexican gang drama set for MBC

Middle Eastern broadcaster MBC has acquired El Mariachi, the Latin American drama based on the Robert Rodriguez film of the same name.

MBC Action will begin airing the 71×60′ series next year following a deal with distributor and producer Sony Pictures Television (SPT).

The plot follows a young mariachi musician who is mistaken for a fugitive and inadvertently thrown into a war between drug cartels. After being unjustly imprisoned, he seeks revenge against those who wronged him.

The series was produced by SPT-owned prodco Teleset and shot on location in Mexico. It aired in Latin America on AXNl, and in the US on Hispanic network MundoFox.

Ziad Yaghi, VP of distribution in the Middle East and Turkey for SPT, said: “While El Mariachi is especially relevant to a Latin American audience, there is a style and sensibility to this series and these characters that will also resonate with Middle Eastern viewers.”
