Former Great British Bake Off hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will return to the BBC to front a rebooted version of 1970s gameshow The Generation Game.

The duo have been confirmed to present the classic show, which is returning to BBC1 after being axed in 2002. They will appear in a four-episode revival, which aims to introduce new challenges and games alongside aspects from the original.

BBC director of content Charlotte Moore and controller entertainment commissioning Kate Phillips have co-commissioned the show from BBC Studios, the BBC’s biggest commercial production arm.

The Generation Game started life in 1971 and counts Bruce Forsyth, Larry Grayson and Jim Davidson as previous hosts. Mel and Sue will be the first female presenters of the show.

“When asked, this is the TV show that viewers most wanted to see back on their screen,” said Guy Freeman, editor of special events and formats at BBC Studios.

Giedroyc and Perkins have taken part in projects individually since stepping down as co-hosts of Bake Off last year, following the show’s acquisition by Channel 4.

However, The Generation Game is the first show they will work on together. It is unclear yet who will star as celebrity judges and when the series will be broadcast.
