Medici uncovered in Anglo-Italian copro

MIPTV: Italy’s most powerful political and banking dynasty of the Renaissance is set to be the subject of an eight-part TV drama coproduction.

The Medici will be coproduced by pay-TV operator Sky Italia, BBC Scotland, Shine Group-owned Kudos Film and TV and Italian start-up WildSide, which is co-developing the project.

The first season dramatises the story of Cosimo de Medici through to his grandson Lorenzo, examining banking, power, corruption, art and religious fundamentalism. It was created by Kudos (Spooks, Hustle, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Law & Order: UK), written by Frank Deasy and Adrian Hodges and executive produced for Kudos by Jane Featherstone and Derek Wax.

Further seasons are being planned to look at the Medici family’s impact and legacy, taking in historical heavyweights such as Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo.

“This deal marks our first step in the development of an international coproduction project,” said Nils Hartmann, Sky Italia’s director of entertainment and cinema.

“We believe The Medici is a series that has solid roots in Italian history and culture but appeals to a global audience. It’s the perfect project to confirm Sky’s commitment to invest in local productions with an innovative twist.”

Wildside is a joint venture between Fox Italia-owned prodco Wilder, independent movie prodco OffSide and Italian screenwriters and directors Fausto Brizzi and Marco Martani (Ex, Notte Prima degli Esami).
