MIPTV: Singapore media and entertainment company Mediacorp has handed commissioning editor Shamala Rajendran a factual acquisitions role.

Rajendran, who works for Mediacorp’s 24-hour news network Channel NewsAsia, told C21 here in Cannes she will be tasked with sourcing factual content on top of her commissioning responsibilities.

“I will be looking for high-quality documentaries that adopt innovative ways of telling a story and thought-provoking documentaries that help the understanding of global contemporary issues – delving deeper into the stories behind the headlines and the historical context we operate in,” she said.

Rajendran added that Channel NewsAsia’s business documentary series Inside the Storm: Back from the Brink has been commissioned for a fourth season.

The series explores the lifecycle of five of the biggest industry players that have come back from the edge of collapse. The documentary uses interviews from current and former CEOs and business professionals to reveal intimate details about how these major companies were run, the risks taken and mistakes made. Former subjects have included Marvel, Olympus and Kodak.

Rajendran said the new season will premiere in August 2018 on Channel NewsAsia, airing first on the network’s VoD platform, and will feature Chinese consumer goods giant Haier, Japan Airlines, Starbucks, Lenovo and possibly Apple. ReviewsXp

Speaking at Asian Side of the Doc in January, Rajendran said that Mediacorp was “experimenting” with digital-first productions and was diversifying its audiences.
