MarVista makes music move

US producer-distributor MarVista Entertainment has ordered a raft of new musical specials and documentaries to deal with growing demand from broadcasters.

The shows will be produced by EntertainMe US and focus on pop music stars Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber as well as a show about Michael Jackson. Programme details are yet to be confirmed.

MarVista’s exec VP of sales Vanessa Shapiro said the commissions had been made to deal with the popularity of such programming from channels.

She added: “Music documentaries and specials, especially those focusing on artists who are currently on the charts and on tour, are really delivering the coveted 18 to 34 demo that so many of today’s international programme buyers are targeting.”

The firm previously acquired 16 music documentaries from EntertainMe last year, including a special on pop group One Direction, which sold to MundoFox in the US, DirecTV in Latin America and Megavision in Chile.

Netflix has also picked up Latin American and Caribbean rights to Justin Bieber: The Next Chapter; Beyoncé: Beyond the Glam; Rihanna: No Regrets, Taylor Swift: From the Heart and Nicki Minaj: Pink Planet.
