LA-based Mance Media is planning to launch its own 4K streaming service next year, as it steps up its activities in the burgeoning ultra-high-definition content sector.

Matthew Mancinelli, CEO of the production studio and distributor, told C21 the as-yet unnamed service will be an app-based channel comprising transactional VoD/EST as well as an SVoD streaming component.

“The content in the app will be available only in 4K Ultra HD – no downscaling. It will most likely go live in North America mid-2016,” Mancinelli said, adding that the channel had already been approved by several so-far undisclosed platforms.

“Mance Media is seeking additional investors for the new 4K branded app/channel. The investment will go toward new acquisitions, marketing and advertising,” he added. “4K content distribution and the growing 4K television market is a five-year plan for us.”

Mancinelli also revealed a number of new sales of its 4K content, drawing on Mance’s library of more than 20 films and documentaries shot using the new resolution standard.

Feature film The Rumperbutts 4K, directed by Marc Brener, has been acquired by Ava Entertainment for South Korea and mainland China, Kino Swiat for Poland and Studio Telephote for CIS.

Other titles on Mance’s 4K slate include nature documentaries Circles of Life: Iceland 4K, Timescapes 4K and Grand Canyon 4K, plus feature film Scarlet’s Witch 4K and 1980s drama The Toy Soldiers.

Mancinelli said he is adding two new 4K titles to the slate each month, with the aim of having 50 4K titles by MipTV in April. The latest is David Jaure’s feature film 3:13, about a homeless man in the 2008 recession.

Explaining the global rise in demand for 4K content, Mancinelli said: “Demand is coming from consumers buying new 4K television sets and from global IPTV/VoD platforms and broadcasters that are now testing 4K linear channels.”
