Magic Light secures Revolting win at Annecy

ANNECY: UK show Revolting Rhymes took the top TV prize as the Annecy International Animated Film Festival drew to a close over the weekend with its Cristal awards ceremony.

Revolting Rhymes was adapted from Roald Dahl’s fairy tales

UK prodco Magic Light Pictures took the Cristal for best TV production for Revolting Rhymes (2×30′), adapted from the iconic Roald Dahl fairy tales.

It marks the third time that Magic Light has won the award at Annecy, which took place last week and attracted a record number of participants from around the world, including a large contingent of producers from China.

Revolting Rhymes has already been sold into 37 countries including Australia, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Spain and Israel, having been originally ordered by BBC1 in the UK.

The show was coproduced with ZDF in Germany and is directed by Jakob Schuh, Jan Lachauer and Bin-han To, with Magic Light’s Martin Pope and Michael Rose producing.

Pope, co-founder of Magic Light, said: “Bringing Roald Dahl’s brilliantly imaginative stories to the screen was a joy. It’s marvellous that the films are now being enjoyed by audiences all over the world.”

Elsewhere, Netflix animation BoJack Horseman received special distinction for a TV series for its episode Fish Out of Water, while Japanese movie Lu Over the Wall took the Cristal for best feature film. Loving Vincent, about artist Vincent Van Gogh, took Annecy’s audience award.
