BBC Worldwide-backed Lookout Point has optioned rights to the four books, beginning with Rabbit, Run, which focuses on a former high school basketball player named Harry ‘Rabbit’ Angstrom who feels trapped in his suburban life.

Davies will adapt the books for Lookout Point, with whom he is also collaborating on BBC1’s adaptations of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy. He previously worked with the prodco on War & Peace.

Davies said Updike was peerless in his ability to examine “the mundane, everyday details of life with such expressionistic, colourful, spiritual power,” and he had been keen to adapt the novels for some time.
