International telecommunications firm Lebara has helped fund the third season of British sitcom Meet the Adebanjos, giving it exclusive rights for its new content service.
It marks the first time the mobile company has invested in original programming and comes as it attempts to increase awareness of its entertainment platform Lebara Play.
Aditya Thakur, CEO of Lebara Play, told C21 that funding the new episodes was part of its strategy to offer its customers exclusive content alongside a wide breadth of international channels.
The comedy, which follows a Nigerian family living in South East London, has a cult following in the UK, where it airs on paynet The Africa Channel, as well as in West Africa, where it has aired on channels such as M-Net.
It was created by independent prodco MTA Productions and is produced alongside London-based Fresh Media Productions. Filming on the show’s third season wrapped earlier this month.
Lebara launched [1] its multi-ethnic content service in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France in June.
The service is initially being aimed at Tamil, Turkish, French West African and English West African diaspora, with further European launches expected in the next month.
Lebara says its content provides a legitimate alternative to counterfeit DVDs and illegal online services for diaspora around the world and sends out a strong anti-piracy message in support of the creative industries.
Subscription packages start at £9.99 (US$15.60) per month, with an introductory set-top box price of £149.
