Disney Junior’s latest animated series will feature its first Latina princess, who will be introduced to viewers in a one-off episode of hit series Sofia the First.

Elena of Avalor

The character Princess Elena of Avalor will appear in the special, with the full series of Elena of Avalor following in 2016. Disney Television Animation is handling production duties.

She is described as “a confident and compassionate teenager living in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.”

Elena of Avalor, a spin-off from Sofia and created for kids aged 2-7 and their families, will be presented in 25 languages on Disney Junior channels and daily programming blocks in 154 countries.

The character will be voiced by Aimee Carrero (ABC Family’s Young & Hungry) and will reflect “the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience,” according to Nancy Kanter, exec VP and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide.

“What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairytale.”

It follows the success of Disney’s live-action drama Violetta, which was a coproduction by Disney channels in EMEA and Latin America.
