Hubert Lacroix will remain atop Canadian public broadcasters CBC and Radio-Canada for another five years, following re-appointment by Ottawa.

Canada’s minister of heritage James Moore yesterday said Lacroix will stay on as president and CEO of the country’s English- and French-language public broadcasters. Lacroix was appointed to his first term in 2008.

His tenure has seen relative stability at Radio-Canada, while the English network has struggled with budget cuts, the loss of key sports properties and other woes. The licence of both networks is up for renewal, for the first time in 13 years, next month before Canada’s broadcast regulator.

“This is great news,” said Remi Racine, chairman of the CBC board of directors, in an email to staff. “His renewal is as much a vote of confidence in Hubert as it is an endorsement of… our vision of being the leader in expressing culture and enriching democratic life.”
