KidsCo, Nelvana pipeline opens

NBCUniversal (NBCU)-backed children’s channel KidsCo has picked up five Nelvana Enterprises titles for its programming revamp in 2013.

The shows come to the international channel next year as part of a previously reported content deal between KidsCo and Canada-based Nelvana, which is owned by KidsCo’s other main shareholder, Corus Entertainment.

KidsCo’s on-air refresh is set to take place on January 8, with the launch of Nelvana titles such as Rolie Polie Olie, Jacob Two-Two, Babar and science series Grossology across Australia, South Africa and Asia.

Meanwhile, Japanese series Beyblade will arrive in Central and Eastern Europe and further content from Nelvana coming to KidsCo across Western Europe will be announced early next year, the company said.

Reflecting on the past year, Hendrik McDermott, MD of KidsCo, said that 2012 had been “a year of content and dubbing investment” for the company.

“Our new Nelvana titles will mean that our valued affiliates can continue to deliver a compelling range of KidsCo’s safe, feel-good and diverse content to audiences worldwide,” he added.

Earlier this year NBCU International took a 51% controlling stake in KidsCo after buying out Cookie Jar Entertainment, putting McDermott in charge.

The deal also saw Corus increase its stake to 42.8%. Cookie Jar remains a long-term producing partner following a multi-year agreement struck concurrently.

Last month Corus said it was looking to do more with its assets in kids’ programming and expects to generate new revenue streams through its studio and distributor subsidiary Nelvana.
