Kickstarter cat doc seeks buyers

An independent documentary producer from Australia is seeking broadcast partners for a new film about Japan’s cat culture that has exceeded its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Cat Nation: A Film About Japan’s Crazy Cat Culture

Cat Nation: A Film About Japan’s Crazy Cat Culture is the latest documentary from filmmaker Tim Delmastro and Queensland-based Moving Screen.

Fronted by British YouTube personality Chris Broad, the doc was fully funded after just 48 hours on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter this month.

It has so far raised A$3,188 (US$2,439) and has 24 days to reach its ‘stretch goal’ of A$20,000 on Kickstarter. This would allow it to go from a 25-minute short into a full-length feature doc.

Due for release at the end of April, the film explores the Japanese fascination with cats, from cat-scented hygiene products to cats with human jobs.

“With contacts at Netflix, iTunes and several major broadcasters around the world, we’re confident we’ll be able to spread this film to broadcasters worldwide,” Delmastro said on Kickstarter.
