Kam&Ka picks up Canuck drama

French production outfit Kam&Ka has signed two international drama co-development deals and picked up scripted format rights to Canadian series Apparences.

The Paris-based company has linked up with Pixcom, producer of Radio-Canada drama Apparences, to adapt the show for France and also co-develop another drama series.

Meanwhile, Kam&Ka has signed a co-development deal for an adventure thriller series with Israeli producer Chayim Sharir, exec producer of Israeli drama Hostages.

Scripted formats specialist Kam&Ka was set up last year by animation producer Samuel Kaminka (Samka Productions) together with his cousin, script writer Stéphane Kaminka, who has worked on a number of drama series, including TF1’s RIS, adapted from an Italian series.

“Our strategy is to either adapt foreign scripted drama or co-develop with a foreign coproducer original projects that can lead to an international coproduction or to two local versions,” said Samuel.

The company has also signed a co-development agreement with France Télévisions Distribution (FTD) for six projects over the next two years.

Kam&Ka and FTD have already jointly acquired French-language format rights to Israeli series Pillar of Smoke. FTD is also involved in Open Code, an original cyber-crime drama series co-developed by Kam&Ka with another Israeli producer, TTV.

“We pitch our projects or the scripted dramas we are interested in to FTD, which can partner with us if it is interested in distributing the French-language series. This enables us to balance our development costs,” explains Kaminka

Kam&Ka is also active as a creative producer, developing the French remake of UK drama Boadchurch with Shine France for France 2 and editing scripts for the new season of TF1 series Doc Martin for Ego Production.
