Job Description:

The Digital Economy & Creative Industries team are looking for an enthusiastic and credible individual to deliver business-facing knowledge transfer activities aimed at stimulating innovation with potential to grow the UK economy. 

In particular, the role aims to promote and drive knowledge transfer between the research base and industry; between the digital and creative industries and other sectors, where there is the potential for disruptive innovation; and to help businesses access the right knowledge, collaborators and investments to develop new products, processes and services.

The post will be varied, working with organisations across the digital and creative industries, but with a focus on opportunities driven by industrial challenges and the application of new, transformative digital and creative technologies into vertical sectors.

Most of your day-to-day role will be meeting digital and creative businesses with the capacity and appetite to undertake research, development and innovation and helping them to connect with other people/organisations in order to solve industry challenges and thereafter generate economic value.

The role will also be highly flexible, working across the KTN to meet demand for new opportunities as they emerge.

Reporting to: Head of Digital Economy & Creative Industries.

Grade: Knowledge Transfer Manager up to £47,500 (depending on experience).

Location: Home or office based working with considerable UK travel expected.

Key accountabilities
  • Helping businesses to innovate via introductions, identifying finance to undertake research, development and innovation
  • Work with KTN colleagues to support Innovate UK’s Delivery Plan
  • Help build a strong and engaged community of UK innovators/innovation contributors within the Digital/Creative sectors, with a particular focus on business-led R&D
  • Develop, maintain and monitor relationships with KTN colleagues and key stakeholders including regular company visits
  • Identify and champion defined areas of importance to the UK economy (e.g. themes, technologies)
  • Deliver and report key business metrics agreed with your line manager
  • Manage a series of key activities of relevance to key UK industry sectors or strategic technology
  • Engage across the KTN to stimulate cross-sector collaboration and support colleagues
  • Take responsibility for contributing towards your own development

Job responsibilities
  • Work within the Creative Industries and Digital Economy team to understand the technology needs and opportunities for the growth of UK Industry and the capabilities of the research base, facilitating the transfer of knowledge within and between these groups and the establishment of business collaborations
  • Help understand and facilitate access to Knowledge Transfer support mechanisms for businesses and to help develop funding and investment applications
  • Assist KTN Specialists in promoting the use of transformative Digital and Creative practices to industrial sectors where there is potential for value creation. This will include visiting companies and assisting with technical queries of how these technologies might transform their specific business. This will involve close working with colleagues in other areas of KTN to identify potential companies and growth markets
  • Market the benefits of KTN and innovation within a business context to the UK Digital and creative sectors including the preparation of promotional material and the use of various media
  • Display and maintain a good technical, industrial and commercial awareness in a broad range of topics of relevance to the UK capability
  • Liaise closely with KTN staff across all teams to ensure a good understanding of the other sector activities, to ensure well informed and integrated working
  • Contribute to the writing of articles for newsletters, blogs of interest to our members
  • Help to organise meetings, workshops, networking events and exchange programmes in a variety of commercial and scientific areas
  • Undertake necessary administrative duties including the timely completion of accurate reports, meeting minutes and expenses
  • Work flexibly across KTN teams on a wide range of tasks and projects as needed

Job Requirements:

  • A post-graduate degree and/or 3 year’s direct work experience in the private Digital and/or Creative sectors
  • Good level of understanding and knowledge of some of the key technologies, challenges and practices of relevance to the role
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the innovation and finance landscape of relevant industries
  • Knowledge and experience of the sector, including key companies and sector dynamics
  • Awareness of knowledge transfer or business development processes would be beneficial
  • Project management experience desirable

Competences
  • This role requires a highly motivated, self-starting and results oriented individual with a good understanding of commercial issues or a desire and the ability to learn on the job
  • Must be a good communicator with well developed written and verbal skills, able to translate complex topics for a broad audience
  • Must be a good listener - able to interact with and understand the needs and capabilities of a wide variety of clients
  • Demonstrable ability to use customer relationship management (CRM) tools
  • Flexible, reliable and adaptable with good interpersonal and time management skills
  • Comfortable working autonomously with little supervision or as a team member as required
  • Must be proficient in normal office software tools with excellent administrative and organisational skills
  • Sound knowledge across a range of technical and/or creative disciplines, and good numeracy
  • Holder of a driving licence preferred, a willingness to travel by public transport or by own car is required as this post involves considerable travel including overnight at times
