The programme, which launched at the end of August, follows the life of the UK’s longest reigning monarch Queen Victoria, who leaves childhood behind when she ascends the throne at the age of 18.

ITV said the series was its top-rated drama of the year so far, averaging 7.7 million viewers and a 29.7% share of viewing based on consolidated overnights.

Victoria is produced by ITV-owned Poldark indie Mammoth Screen and distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment. It is a coproduction with PBS’s Masterpiece in the US, which will premiere the first run from January 15.

ITV’s senior drama commissioner Victoria Fea will oversee production of the second run from the UK network’s perspective while Rebecca Eaton serves as PBS’s executive producer.

Novelist Daisy Goodwin will again be writing and exec producing alongside Mammoth Screen’s Damien Timmer and Kate McKerrell (Lost in Austen). The second series will be produced by Paul Frift.

The renewal comes as US SVoD service Netflix gets ready to launch its large-scale royal drama The Crown worldwide. The US$100m drama follows the life of Victoria’s great great granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

ITV will be hoping that Victoria continues to fill the gap left by period drama Downton Abbey, which ended last year after six seasons.
