ITV finds Manson Family’s Lost Tapes

UK commercial broadcaster ITV has commissioned a documentary from Naked Entertainment exploring infamous criminal Charles Manson.

The Manson Family: The Lost Tapes (working title, 2×60’) will use hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage to reveal the inside workings of the murderous cult headed by Manson, who died last November. The two-parter is being produced by UK indie Naked, which unearthed the tapes in 2016 following the death of the original filmmaker, Robert Hendrickson.

The documentary will detail how Manson assembled a group of young followers in a commune before going on to commit one of the most notorious series of murders in US history, including that of actress Sharon Tate, who at the time was eight months pregnant with her director husband Roman Polanski’s child.

Naked CEO Simon Andreae will exec produce the documentary alongside Hugh Ballantyne, Allan Gaba and Dean Egnater. The Manson Family: The Lost Tapes was commissioned by ITV commissioning editor Kate Teckman and head of factual entertainment Sue Murphy.

“Almost 50 years since the Manson Family murders, the radicalisation of young people is a more pressing issue than ever,” Teckman said. “Hendrickson’s extraordinary unseen footage provides a chilling and compelling insight into how vulnerable young people were influenced into carrying out some of the most horrific murders of the 20th century.”

Andreae said the “raw, candid and compelling” material would take audiences “right inside the Manson Family home at the very time the crimes were committed.”

“The footage shows – in real time – how the cult members were brainwashed under Manson’s influence,” he added.
