ITV extends Thunderbirds’ return

CITV has commissioned ITV Studios in the UK and Pukeko Pictures of New Zealand to make a second run of Thunderbirds Are Go, the reinvention of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s classic 1960s puppet series.

The broadcaster has ordered the second 26×30’ season before the first run has even aired, with the follow-up expected to air in 2016 and 2017.

The debut season will premiere on ITV and CITV in spring 2015, 50 years after the TV debut of Thunderbirds.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVSGE) has pre-sold the series to international broadcasters including TVNZ in New Zealand, Australia’s Nine Network, Noga in Israel and pan-Arab broadcaster MBC.

The show will once again feature the globetrotting International Rescue family of heroes, as well as their collection of unusual vehicles.

The cast is led by Rosamund Pike (The World’s End, Gone Girl) as Lady Penelope and David Graham reprising his role as chauffeur and International Rescue agent Parker.

The prodcos have teamed with New Zealand’s Weta Workshop (Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) to coproduce the series, which features a mix of CGI animation and live-action models.

It is exec produced by Estelle Hughes for ITV Studios, Giles Ridge for ITVSGE and Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith for Pukeko Pictures.

Head writer is Rob Hoegee (Slugterra, Generator Rex, Teen Titans, League of Super Evil) and the series director is David Scott (Lego, Star Wars), with Theo Baynton (the WotWots) as episodic director. It was commissioned by Jamila Metran for CITV. ITVSGE is the global distributor for the Thunderbirds Are Go television series and consumer products.
