ITV brings Drive to halt

Drive is hosted by Vernon Kay

Drive is hosted by Vernon Kay

UK commercial broadcaster ITV has pulled the plug on celebrity motoring series Drive after just one season.

The show, which hails from ITV’s UK prodco Twofour, has struggled to break two million viewers each week.

It sees celebrities take the wheel in old bangers, buggies, 4x4s and rally cross cars, among others. The series is hosted by Vernon Kay, with UK racing legend Jason Plato on hand to offer expert advice.

The show’s failure is a blow to ITV, which was hoping for a good performance from Drive to rival the BBC’s forthcoming Top Gear reboot and its companion show Extra Gear.

Amazon Prime Video is also launching a motoring series fronted by former Top Gear trio Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

ITV Studios Global Entertainment sells Drive as a finished series and format internationally, launching it at last month’s MipTV.

A spokesman for the show said: “Any suggestion that Drive won’t be returning for a second series is pure speculation and we will make a decision in due course.”
