Iflix orders first original comedy special

Jon Atherton: Disoriental was filmed in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysian SVoD service iflix has commissioned its first original comedy special with a show from Asian production outfit Double Vision.

Jon Atherton: Disoriental follows the Australian comic’s misadventures in Asia, a region in which he has lived and worked for over 20 years. The one-hour show is produced by Malaysia-based Double Vision and was filmed in early February in Kuala Lumpur.

It sees Atherton lampoon Asian stereotypes, with each of his observations drawn from years of living dangerously across the largest continent on Earth.

The special aims to emulate the success of other stand-up comedy series including Malaysian series Oi! Jaga Mulut and its Indonesian and Filipino versions, Oi! Jaga Lambe and Hoy! Bibig Mo.

Mark Francis, iflix global director of original programming, said he couldn’t think of another comic who can “so ably poke fun at the region’s diversity and literally ‘speak the language,’ thus achieving an elusive pan-Asian appeal.”

He added: “We also knew, based on his performance in Oi! Jaga Mulut, that our audiences wanted more of Jon’s hard-hitting brand of humour. So producing a solo special made total sense.”

The announcement comes swiftly after iflix agreed a deal with Irish company QYou Media to offer user-generated online video from QYou to its subscribers.
