Hulu links up with HBO

HBO’s mega-hit drama Game of Thrones

US streamer Hulu has struck a deal that provides its subscribers with access to programming from premium cablenet HBO.

The arrangement allows Hulu subscribers to stream all of HBO’s TV series, movies, documentaries, sports, and comedy and music specials – both live and on demand – from within the streamer’s service.

The channel costs $14.99 per month, while HBO sibling Cinemax is available for a further $9.99 per month. Shows such as Game of Thrones, The Defiant Ones, Ballers and Insecure are available, as are classic series including The Sopranos.

Tim Connolly, senior VP, head of distribution and partnerships at Hulu, said that “by combining HBO’s iconic programming with our world-class user experience and deep content offering” the company was “giving viewers easy and highly personalised access to the very best of television.”

Sofia Chang, exec VP, worldwide digital distribution and home entertainment at HBO, added: “Hulu has been a pioneer in the television streaming business, building a robust user base by offering top-tier programming from a variety of networks.

“We see them as the perfect partner to help us fulfil our promise to HBO fans, bringing our unparalleled programming to audiences in the most sophisticated, convenient and innovative ways.”

Hulu already offers access to live TV channels for US$40 a month, having struck deals with A+E and NBCUniversal, among others.
