Host in the Box arrives in Spain

A Spanish broadcaster has commissioned a local version of a new Endemol format in which a presenter is locked in a wooden box and transported to a mystery location to explore a different side of life.

Cuatro will air a version of Host in the Box, produced by Endemol Spain, after picking it up following its debut at MipTV last week.

Originally developed by Endemol Germany, the factual entertainment format launched on ProSieben in February this year and has also been produced in Hungary, for Super TV2.

Each episode sees the presenter locked in a wooden box and shipped off to a different location equipped with “nothing but burning curiosity and the box they arrive in.”

Scenarios include experiencing life among Hell’s Angels, an Amish community, porn stars and more and the host has to adapt to each environment, completing a series of tasks, before being put back in the box and sent somewhere else.

Iris Boelhouwer, Endemol’s MD of creative operations said: “This latest deal in Spain is a great example of how the format can be reworked for any territory and we expect viewers will love seeing the host thrown out of their comfort zone into an entirely new world.”
