HBO preps true crime special

HBO in the US is prepping a true crime special about the murder of a mother who had Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP).

Mommy Dead and Dearest, which has been directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr, explores the life of Dee Dee Blanchard, who was killed in 2015.

Her wheelchair-bound daughter was implicated in the murder but was later found to have been the victim of her mother’s abuse via MSBP since early childhood.

The show, which airs on May 15, unravels the murder and explores how Blanchard had subjected her daughter to decades of unnecessary medical treatment. It will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO Now, HBO Go and affiliate portals.

MSBP is a mental health problem that sees a caregiver make up or cause an illness or injury in a person under their care.
