HBO preps Gandolfini’s Night

US premium cablenet HBO has announced a summer launch for The Night Of, the limited series exec produced by the late Sopranos star James Gandolfini.

The eight-part series is based on Peter Moffat’s Criminal Justice drama series that aired on the BBC in 2008 and 2009.

Gandolfini was also due to star in the series before his death in 2013 with Robert De Niro committing to step in. However, the Taxi Driver star had to pull out for scheduling reasons with John Turturro taking his place.

Gandolfini has a posthumous exec producer credit on the series, which is created by Steven Zaillian and Richard Price.

The project is produced by Filmrights and BBC Worldwide Productions for HBO. An exact launch date is yet to be announced.
