HBO picks up more Girls

US premium cable channel HBO has ordered second seasons of two of its newest comedy series.

Girls and Veep have both been given 10-episode second seasons, just weeks after their debuts last month.

Girls, created by Lena Dunham, takes a comic look at a group of four women in their early 20s living in New York. Dunham, Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner exec produce, alongside co-exec producers Bruce Eric Kaplan and Ilene S Landress.

Veep sees former Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus play a US vice president who discovers the job is nothing like she expected but everything she was warned about.

The series was created by Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It) and is exec produced by Iannucci, Christopher Godsick and Frank Rich. Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche co-exec produce, with Louis-Dreyfus and Laing producing.

In addition, HBO has given a straight-to-series order for a new eight-part drama called True Detective, according to US reports.

The show is about two detectives, played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who are involved in the 17-year hunt for a killer. It is produced by Anonymous Content.

Meanwhile, HBO has lined up a seven-week run of new documentaries from directors including Marc Levin and Ellen Goosenberg Kent, to air on Monday nights beginning in June.

The films include One Nation Under Dog: Stories of Fear, Loss and Betrayal, about the US’s obsession with dogs; and Me @ The Zoo, profiling a teenage video blogger and the rise of internet celebrity.

Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present is a behind-the-scenes look at the eponymous artist as she prepares to showcase her controversial work at The Museum of Modern Art.

Hard Times: Lost On Long Island looks at long-term unemployment by examining four families over six months; while The Tsunami & The Cherry Blossom follows survivors of Japan’s tsunami in March 2011.

Birders: The Central Park Effect reveals the different birds that flock to New York’s green space; and Vito recalls the life of Vito Russo, one of the founders of the gay liberation movement.

Finally, About Face: Supermodels Then and Now explores the lives of some of the fashion world’s most famous faces.
