HBO in Asia has started production on its first Chinese original series, a six-part drama based on a Taiwanese short film.

The Psychic is being produced by HBO Asia and has been developed with Taiwanese broadcaster Public Television Service (PTS) and Singaporean production company InFocus Asia (IFA).

The 6×60′ show, about a young woman who sees spirits, is set and filmed in Taiwan and is based on PTS’s The Busy Young Psychic, which won best short film at the Taipei Film Festival.

The series was created by IFA and Taiwanese writer-director Chen Ho-Yu, who also wrote and directed the short film, and is set to debut in early 2017 on PTS and in 23 territories on HBO.

Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia, said: “Asia’s rich diversity offers inspiration for countless of stories waiting to be told and local talents to be discovered.”

The series, HBO Asia’s first Taiwanese production, follows on from English-language fantasy series Halfworlds, which was renewed for a second season in June.

HBO Asia is also collaborating with China Movie Channel on an anthology of Chinese martial arts movies with Hong Kong action director Corey Yuen executive producing the first two shows.
