HBO, BBC board prison ship drama

HBO Canada and BBC America are working with Los Angeles-based Electus on a 19th Century period drama about convicts heading from Ireland to Australia.

The networks have ordered scripts for Iron Belly with a view to taking it to series. Electus will serve as the production studio, coproducing with LA- and Toronto-based Darius Films.

Iron Belly explores the brutal passage of a floating prison ship from Ireland to Australia and the effects that the conditions have on those on board. The series has been created by Jonathan Sobol (A Beginner’s Guide to Endings, The Art of the Steal) and Jeremy Boxen (Lost Girl, End Game).

John Pollak, president of Electus International, distribution arm of Electus, said the show would have a “unique mix of history, action and drama.” He will exec produce alongside Electus CEO Chris Grant and Nicholas Tabarrok of Darius Films.
