HBO, BBC board new Oz comedy

Australia’s ABC, HBO in the US and BBC3 in the UK are teaming up again with writer-creator Chris Lilley, the comedian behind We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High.

Lilley and Laura Waters’ Australian prodco Princess Pictures have been commissioned to make Ja’mie: Private School Girl (6×30’).

The show features the racist, snobbish, foul-mouthed schoolgirl character, created by Lilley, who first appeared in the ABC’s We Can Be Heroes (aka The Nominees), which sold to Fox International Channels in the UK.

Ja’mie then appeared in We Can Be Heroes, which HBO and BBC3 acquired.

Scripted by Lilley, the new series will follow the teenager in her final few weeks at Hillford Girls Grammar School as she gets caught up in events that change her life.

Lilley and Waters’ Princess Pictures are producing in association with ABC TV and HBO. It will air on the ABC later this year.

“I find teenage girls endlessly funny,” Lilley said. “So being able to write for and play the meanest bitch in school has been so fun.”
