HBO Asia, Hulu detect Miss Sherlock

Yuko Takeuchi as Sherlock

HBO Asia and Hulu in Japan are gearing up to launch their first coproduction later this year, an interpretation of Sherlock Holmes set in modern-day Tokyo with female leads.

Miss Sherlock (8×60′) will premiere across 20 Asian territories on HBO Asia’s network of channels and catch-up services as well as on Hulu in Japan on April 27.

The adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic creation will see Yuko Takeuchi (Dog in a Sidecar, Flashforward) star as Sherlock while her crime-solving partner, Dr Wato Tachibana, aka Dr John Watson, will be played by Shihori Kanjiya (Chiritotechin, Kuchizuke).

It will see Tachibana, a surgeon who recently returned from a volunteer doctors’ mission in Syria, come together with an investigation consultant to the police department to solve bizarre and difficult cases.

The supporting cast includes Kenichi Takito (Rhythm & Police), Tomoya Nakamura (Spinning Kite), Yukiyoshi Ozawa (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders), Ryohei Otani (Gunman in Joseon), Yuki Saito (I am a Housewife) and Ran Ito (Garden of the Wind).

It follows the international success of BBC Worldwide’s Sherlock drama series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role and Martin Freeman as Watson, which has been sold to more than 240 territories across the world and has won several Baftas and Emmys.

CBS in the US also adapted the classic story for its drama series Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as his sidekick Watson.
