Greenbird illuminates Big Light

UK production finance outfit Greenbird has taken a minority stake in Big Light Productions, the company set up by former The X-Files showrunner Frank Spotnitz.

Greenbird, set up 18 months ago by Shine TV’s Jamie Monro and Argonon’s Stuart Mullin, described its relationship with Big Light as primarily a support role.

Spotnitz, whose credits also include Hunted, Strike Back and Transporter – The Series, has been based in London for the past four years and has a slate of new drama projects in development on both sides of the pond.

Some of the titles on Big Light’s slate include Freud, to be coproduced with NBCUniversal-owned Carnival Films, and The Man in the High Castle, based on the Philip K Dick novel, to be produced with Scott Free TV.

“This is an incredibly exciting time in television, with more opportunities than ever to produce interesting and creatively challenging series for a broad audience,” said Spotnitz. “With our experience in both the US and Europe, Big Light is uniquely placed to produce the kind of high-quality dramas viewers love.”

Greenbird’s Mullin added: “Frank’s experience and creativity is amazing, and Big Light has a really exciting slate of projects in development. He has strong relationships across the world with both traditional and new content partners.”

The deal marks Greenbird’s first move into drama, after it initially backed entertainment and factual start-up Tuesday’s Child, following this with investments in Rumpus Media and another factual prodco, Riverdog Productions.

Big Light earlier this year signed a first-look deal with Germany’s Tandem Communications.
