Google and CBS in web TV tie-up

Google has reportedly agreed a deal with CBS for the tech giant to carry the US network on its forthcoming low-cost streaming service.

The new service, dubbed Unplugged, is due to launch on YouTube next year and CBS is the first US network to agree a carriage deal, according to multiple reports.

The agreement also means CBS-owned CBS Sports and Pop, its joint-venture cablenet with Lionsgate, will be available to customers of Google’s “skinny bundle” channel package.

Google is currently in talks with several other US networks, including ABC and NBC, to try to bring them on board, with 21st Century Fox said to be closest to agreeing terms.

This would make Fox, plus cablenets FX, Fox Sports and National Geographic, available via the bundle. Wall Street Journal was first to report the news.

It comes after Hulu announced a similar online TV service of its own, while Apple is also strongly rumoured to be developing its own alternative to traditional pay TV offers.
