FX spies exit strategy for Americans

The Americans

The Americans centres on two undercover KGB agents

FX in the US has ordered the final two seasons of Cold War spy drama The Americans,
which will end after its sixth run.

The drama, which follows two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington DC as they attempt to remain undercover, is a coproduction from Fox Television Studios and FX Productions.

The 13-part fifth season will launch in 2017 while the last 10 episodes will begin airing in 2018.

Eric Schrier, FX’s co-president, said the order would allow showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields – who have an overall deal at FX Productions – to tell the story “to its perfect conclusion.”

billy_connolyITV in the UK aired the first two seasons of the Emmy-nominated series between June 2013 and May 2014 but chose not to air later seasons after ratings slipped.

It was created by exec producer Weisberg (Falling Skies), a former CIA agent who went on to become an accomplished author. Fields and Graham Yost are also executive producers, along with Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of Amblin Television.
