FX fits up Glover comedy

US cablenet FX has ordered a pilot for a comedy series written by and starring actor and rapper Donald Glover of Community and 30 Rock fame.

Atlanta will be produced by FX Productions, while Glover, Paul Simms (Girls, Flight of the Conchords) and Dianne McGunigle of Schiff Company will exec produce.

The pilot follows two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene whose opposing views on art versus commerce, success and race will make their career paths tricky.

Glover, who wrote episodes of NBC’s 30 Rock and starred in Community, will play a college dropout who reconnects with his long buried ambition to be a rapper when his estranged cousin becomes a sudden star.

The actor and writer has released two official albums under his rap moniker Childish Gambino and also performs stand-up.

“Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter,” said Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.

Atlanta is the fourth comedy series pilot produced or ordered by FX Networks this year, joining Bill Burr’s Pariah and an untitled Tracy Morgan project.

Earlier this year FX ordered Baskets, which will air in 2016 and stars Zach Galifianakis and Louis CK.
